Wedding Cakes across the World

The "Sweet" Tradition

One of the oldest traditions of a wedding day is the cake. This tradition started in  Ancient Rome, where a cake of wheat or barley was broken over the bride's head to bring good fortune to the couple. During the 16th century,  the “bride's pie” was served at most weddings. Different from the modern sweet wedding cake, bride pie is savoury and rich in flavor. The tradition has changed from century to century with different styles and flavors.  By the medieval days, the English stopped with the plain ol’ wheat cake and starting stacking spiced buns, scones, and cookies as high as possible;a precursor to the tiered cakes of today. The bride and groom would then try to kiss over it. The legend said if they smooched successfully without letting the whole thing topple over, they’d have good fortune!  A French chef thought the pile of pastries was tacky and recommended creating a nice stack with pieces of broom handle, but the nice tiers wouldn’t catch on for a couple centuries .

Since this tradition is much to be celebrated, we would like to feature several amazing wedding cake makers all around the world to bring you beautiful and delicious cakes that hopefully bring you inspiration for your own wedding day! And if a cakemaker we feature below is near you - even better!
