The Yard at The Lock Up

The Lock-Up is a unique cultural destination located in the heart of Newcastle’s heritage precinct. The building was originally Newcastle’s Police Station and Lock-Up from 1861 to 1982 and is an important example of colonial government architecture. Now operating as a contemporary art space and inner city creative hub, the heritage listed building includes a purpose built gallery space, rare heritage listed cells, an event and installation space in what was the former exercise yard, and an onsite apartment for multi-disciplinary residencies. The Lock-Up spaces are also utilised for public and private events and functions. Two main spaces are for hire, The Yard and the Gallery.
