Sweet Cheeks Winery's history began long before its first guests arrived on Thanksgiving 2005, starting with founder Dan Smith's vision after he moved to Oregon from California and became captivated by a cattle-grazed hillside across from his home. His commercial refrigeration work installing equipment in wineries sparked an interest in winemaking, leading him to purchase the property in 1989 and plant 42 acres of vineyard with his father-in-law, Charlie, and friend Bruce Biehl, completing it in 2001. 

Inspired by evenings spent under an oak tree with friends after long work days, Dan decided to build a winery, breaking ground in 2002 and producing the first vintage in 2004 with help from neighboring wineries. The boutique winery opened to guests in 2005, named Sweet Cheeks for the rolling hills that inspired it all. Though Dan passed away in 2018, his family and longtime team continue his legacy of pursuing dreams with determination and laughter, always accompanied by great wine and great company.
